Hey everyone!!
Yes, here I am again, posting once in a blue moon. And about Austen-related stuff. I just love the girl.
What on Earth is this post? you’ll ask. I think we’d get a better answer if you answered the question, because I have no idea. All I know is that I was scrolling down an Austen-related meme Instagram profile and suddenly felt how relatable the quotes are (when slightly taken out of context).
So here we are, I guess. I had fun writing the post, and I hope you’ll have fun reading it!
(Some quotes are just extracts, or taken from the adaptations instead of the book, for readability and easiness of use.)

♡ “In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings cannot be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” ~ Mr. Fitzwilliam “Disastrous Babbling Tornado” Darcy
That’s me to:
- My bed at the end of a long day when I still have to shower and brush my teeth but have no will to live left in me.
- A cup of water after running 5km- or walking 10km+ when I still have to get rid of my running shoes but have no energy to.

♡ “Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.” ~ Mary “Mildly Gothic, Very Boring” Bennet
That’s me when:
- I try to convince myself I do not need more clothes because my style changes every two weeks and I’ll want something else by next Sunday but end up pressing “purchase” anyway.

♡ “Vanity, not love, has been my folly.”” ~ Lizzie “It Has Occurred To Me That I Can Be Wrong” Bennet
That’s me when:
- I leave the whole content of my wardrobe on the floor after trying on every single combination of outfits I own and end up putting on my comfort jeans and turtleneck.
- I wake up with a searing headache – byproduct of me wanting to demonstrate I am not the lightweight drinker I actually am – and have to lie about ‘having a cold’.

♡ “Nothing is more deceitful… than the appearance of humility. It is often only carelessness of opinion, and sometimes an indirect boast.” ~ Mr. Fitzwilliam “Honesty Is Always the Best Policy, Even If I’m Shooting Myself in the Foot” Darcy
That’s me when:
- I try my best to sit in a pretty manner and avoid looking at a pretty stranger in the subway while turning on all my other perception senses and telepathy ability to the maximum to catch their attention.

♡ “From the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, you selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realise that you were the last man in the world that I could be prevailed upon to marry.” ~ Lizzie “Burn Machine” Bennet
That’s me to:
- Whatever distasteful leftover has the audacity to still be in the fridge when I open it for the third time in five minutes because the house is empty and I want a snack.

♡ “The distance is nothing when one has a motive; only three miles. I shall be back by dinner.” ~ Lizzie “I Want It, I Get It” Bennet
That’s me when:
- I really want a snack and thus have to dress presentably to go grab it at the store because no, I will not eat the leftover boiled potatoes.
- I have kept university books for over four months out of
lazinessforgetfulness and now need to bring them back to the library or the fine is going to be as expensive as my tuition fee.

♡ “My good opinion, once lost, is lost forever.” ~ Fitzwilliam “Broody Cupcake” Darcy
That’s me to:
- The public transport system around here when the bus is 3 minutes late.
- A professor who answers my question with another question or with the answer to another question.

♡ “And what excellent boiled potatoes. It’s been many years since I had such an exemplary vegetable.” ~ Mr. “Painful Nuisance” Collins
That’s me when:
- I’m left alone with someone I don’t know that well and have to make small talk beyond, “Hi, how are you, what a terrible weather, do you think it will rain?”
- When my course tutor asks what I thought of the lecture I had a week to watch and ended up not watching because I was rewatching Pride and Prejudice (1995) instead.

♡ “Do anything rather than marry without affection.” ~ Jane “Precious Ray of Sunshine” Bennet
That’s me when:
- I decide to dedicate my whole day off to trying on maxi dresses with flower prints or watch a period drama instead of studying.

♡ “I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.” ~ Mr. Fitzwilliam “Puppy-Eyed Softie” Darcy
That’s me when:
- I am well into an all-nighter to write a paper due the next morning for a subject I didn’t even know I was taking.
- I look at myself in the mirror towards the end of the day and find myself actually attractive when six hours earlier I thought I was fit to be the inspiration for a farmer’s scarecrow.

♡ “I have not the pleasure of understanding you.” ~ Mr. “Cool As a Cucumber” Bennet
That’s me when:
- I have to write “what?” in an essay that’s supposed to be 2k words.
- I am writing an email to my course tutor explaining that, due to them not describing the assignment in the least, I have absolutely zero idea on how to proceed.
- I check my bank account and it’s £100 short of what I thought I remembered.

♡ “You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.” ~ Mr. Fitzwilliam “Definitely a Softie” Darcy
That’s me when:
- I ask my boss for a free day or some off-time on a working day knowing very well I’d already asked and they’d already said yes but still dreading they’ve forgotten.

♡ “Mary wished to say something very sensible, but knew not how.” ~ Jane “Beautiful Yet Painfully Accurate Prose” Austen
That’s me when:
- Always. That’s always me when I have to make conversation. I am socially stupid.

♡ “I should infinitely prefer a book.” ~ Mary “I Am Actually a Lot Like You and Now You’re Starting to Worry You’re Boring as Heck Too” Bennet
That’s me when:
- Always. In any circumstance. To any question.

How do you relate to these quotes? Do you know any of them by heart? Do they make you want to read/watch Pride and Prejudice again?

This was too good! I laughed all the way through, the names were hilarious 😆 The last two are me all the time, I am a social disgrace 😅

I’m so glad it made you laugh, Cherry! The names were actually taken from Jane Austen’s original draft 😂

“BROODY CUPCAKE” DARCY BAHAHAHAHA. Jane Austen would be very proud of you 😌
I have to say, P&P’s first line “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife” is iconic and perfectly sets the tone 😂
I also enjoy “I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine” and “Do not consider me now as an elegant female, intending to play you, but as a rational creature, speaking the truth from her heart”. Also “Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of both were overspread with the deepest blush” is sweet 😊

The first quote must be one of the best lines in literature ever. And I love “I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine” too!! I wish I could talk like Lizzie… Have a nice week, Eleanor!

I loved reading this post, this was so funny!! “I do not have the talent of conversing easily with people I have never met before” yup, Darcy is me. (That’s a line from the 2005 film BTW, I did not enjoy the book that much) and now I’m thinking Mary is a lot like me too! Haha, those last two quotes were just too relatable.

Thank you, Jan! Honestly, I was sick of reading about Mary being the misunderstood sister, but now I’m starting to see it 😂 (Do you prefer the 2005 or 1995 version?)

I’ve never watched the 1995 version but I really like the 2005 film!

The 1995 version might not be as artistic and beautiful as the 2005 one (although that’s relative, it’s still gorgeous), but it stays really close to the book.
(Have you seen the American ending to the 2005 version?)

It is an iconic quote, but my love life is so inexistent that I had no reason to include it in the post 😂 Thank you for taking the time to comment, Yesha!

Alice I loved this post!! I laughed so much throughout… PUPPY EYED SOFTIE, would you look at that?! I have read like a few chapters from here and there of P&P, and I looked up the entire plot on google, so I know about most of the characters, and was familiar with a couple of these quotes as well.
And again, this post was so creative and genius and hilarious! Can’t wait to see more of your amazing content🥰😊
